The Lady Bulldog softball team didn’t necessarily give the bleacher-fuls of little girls dreaming of the day they’ll don the orange and white a long evening at the ballpark Tuesday. But they definitely gave them plenty to cheer about.

In their final regular-season games of 2018, the Lady ‘Dogs made quick work of the Class 4A Ramettes of Portales, taking Game One 16-0 in three innings and the nightcap 11-0 in four-and-a-half.

The Artesia girls racked up 17 hits on the evening, including four home runs, while allowing just two and playing error-free softball on Artesia Girls’ Softball Association Appreciation Night at the Mack Chase Athletic Complex.

The Lady Bulldogs got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday, logging four runs on a Kali Crandall sac-fly and a three-run homer by Gabrielle Gomez.

With senior Kacey Thurman in the circle, the Ramettes were unable to move a runner past first in their inaugural two at-bats of the game, and the Lady ‘Dogs dug their hole even deeper in the bottom of the second with five runs on a Thurman bases-loaded walk and a grand slam by Adrianna Baeza.

After holding Portales scoreless once again in the top of the third, Artesia then went to work closing things out, running the lineup and notching runs on a two-RBI double by Presley Skinner, sac-flies by Thurman and Baeza, and a Melody Payne RBI double before Gomez stepped to the plate and delivered a walk-off, two-run bomb.

Gomez was 2-3 on the day with the two homers and five RBI, Skinner went 3-3 with a double and two runs batted in, and Baeza was 1-1 with the slam.

Thurman took the W defensively with two hits and no runs allowed through three complete.
Game Two got off to a bit of a slower start Tuesday, as both teams went scoreless through two-and-a-half.

But in the bottom of the third, the Lady ‘Dogs finally lit up the scoreboard, courtesy of a Gomez sac-fly, a Kamiley Marquez single, a Chanler Groves two-RBI base hit, and an Alexa Riggs bunt single.

With senior Crandall in the circle throwing a perfect game, the Lady Bulldogs secured the run-rule margin in the bottom of the fourth, with Gomez notching a bases-loaded walk before catcher Payne cleared the bases with Artesia’s second grand slam of the night.

Crandall stepped off the rubber short of completing the five-inning perfect game, giving way to sister Rylee in the fifth, who continued the no-hitter and nearly the unblemished contest, as well, giving up one walk.

With the sweep, the Lady Bulldogs improved to 12-2 as they prepare to kick off the second season Friday at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. against Roswell High on the road. The Lady Coyotes are 4-10 on the year, most recently dropping a double dip to Hobbs.
