Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Centre Avenue Baptist Church for Vertie Simmons of Artesia.
Simmons, 78, passed away Thursday, March 22, 2018, in Artesia.
Ed Hickey will officiate the services, with interment to follow at Woodbine Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Rodney Standard, Buddy Simmons, Danny Parker, Larry Shipman, Dennis Davis, Mike Shannon, Jeff Youtsey and Michael Smedley. Honorary pallbearers are Randy Scott, Leon Simmons, George Chase Jr. and Chevy Chase.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday at Terpening & Son Mortuary.
Vertie was born Sept. 21, 1939, in Wellington, Texas, the daughter of William Anderson and Zada (Fields) Randall. She came to Artesia in 1958 from Texas.
On July 20, 1961, she married Virgil Simmons Jr. in Carlsbad.
Vertie was a babysitter for many years and helped raise many children. She was a member of Centre Avenue Baptist Church and the Senior Center, and enjoyed ceramics, quilting, bingo and fishing.
Survivors include goddaughter Cassie Whitt of Woodsboro, Texas; sister Mollie Simmons of Artesia; and many nieces and nephews, including Cindy, Tracey, Janice, Jennifer, Becky, Linda, Sherry, Jodi, James, Timmy, Rodney, Curtis and Buddy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Simmons Jr., on March 20, 1993; her parents; and brothers Willie Wayne Randall and George Randall.
