A Dexter woman has been scheduled to appear on charges of embezzlement relating to the theft of gift cards from the Artesia Wal-Mart.

Artesia Police Department officers were dispatched Jan. 3 to Wal-Mart in reference to the crime. They were informed store manager Jennifer Torres, 31, of Dexter, had been caught loading gift cards for personal use.

Wal-Mart’s Assets Protection Division provided police with a list of 33 gift cards used, some multiple times, and video of the transactions.

Receipts indicated Torres stole a total of $6,374.28. The store was able to recover $1,522.76 of those funds, leaving $4,851.52 missing.

Torres agreed to speak with police and, according to the report, stated she had begun loading gift cards without paying for them in November 2017. She told officers she was in financial trouble and had continued to take gift cards “because it was easy.”

Torres was subsequently arrested on charges of embezzlement (over $2,500 but less than $20,000). She is scheduled to appear March 14 for preliminary examination in Artesia Magistrate Court.
