Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Sombra del Monte Christian Church, 2525 Vermont St. NE, Albuquerque, for Nadine Joplin Hughes, former Artesia resident
Hughes, daughter of Jay and Virginia Joplin, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, in Albuquerque.
She was born in Roswell but was raised in Artesia, where she was a member of First Methodist Church, the Girl Scouts, Order of the Rainbow, and school choruses. After graduating from Artesia High School in 1961, Nadine studied at New Mexico State University.
In 1965, she married Richard “Dick” Hughes and devoted the next several years to creating a home and raising their children: Darryl, Lorri, Rick and Ginger. The family lived in Roswell, Tucson, Ariz., and Arvada, Colo., but returned to New Mexico around 1980.
Nadine revived her desire to work in the medical field by earning an associate’s degree in physical therapy, resulting in a 20-year career at Albuquerque’s Lovelace Hospital. In this role, she frequently encountered Artesians who had come there for therapy.
Nadine was a member of Sombra del Monte Christian Church in Albuquerque, where she served as an elder in charge of worship and as a choir member.
She will be missed by those who survive her: sons Darryl and wife Barbara, and Rick and wife Teri, both of Albuquerque; grandson David of Albuquerque; daughter Lorri of Vancouver, Wash.; sister Norma Joplin Sivers and husband Mark of Fort Worth, Texas; and their son and daughter, Gregory and Andrea.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her daughter, Ginger.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the New Mexico Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 9500 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, N.M., 87111, or online.
