An Artesia man was arrested Tuesday after stealing one vehicle and attempting to enter several others.

Artesia Police Department officers were dispatched around 8 a.m. Tuesday to the Abo Apartments in reference to a male subject causing a disturbance and opening the door of a truck parked in the area of the apartments.

Officers made contact with the man, identified as Jenio Berdoza, 36, of Artesia, who denied opening the door. Witnesses, however, reported seeing him open the door of a red 1998 Ford F150.

The owner of the vehicle could not be located; officers took a report of the incident with intent to contact the owner another time, and Berdoza was instructed to leave the area.

Around half an hour later, officers were advised Berdoza had been seen entering a green SUV after being told to leave the Abo Apartments. He drove away in the vehicle.

During that conversation, dispatch advised officers another reporting party had seen a male subject dressed all in black entering someone else’s vehicle in the area of Artesia General Hospital. The man then began walking south on 13th Street.

Police found Berdoza in the 600 block of North 13th Street attempting to open the driver’s side door of a gold 2010 Ford F250 parked at the residence. He told officers the vehicle belonged to him. He was subsequently detained while officers verified the truck did not, in fact, belong to him, at which time Berdoza was placed under arrest.

As police were taking him into custody, dispatch reported a resident of the Abo Apartments reported her green SUV had been stolen. Officers were able to locate the SUV in the AGH parking lot and also made contact with the owner of the vehicle Berdoza had attempted to enter while at AGH.

The owner’s grandson was seated in that vehicle at the time and stated Berdoza had opened the driver’s side door. When he asked what Berdoza was doing, Berdoza responded that he was “his driver.” The grandson told Berdoza to get out of the truck, which he did.

Berdoza was subsequently charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, burglary of a vehicle, and attempt to commit felony burglary.
