An Artesia man added a pair of charges onto his warrant arrest Thursday after attempting to flee the police.

An Artesia Police Department officer on patrol just after 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the area of the Allsup’s at 1910 W. Main St. spotted a SUV known to be driven by Gabriel Chavez, 37, of Artesia, whom the officer knew to have an outstanding warrant.

The officer entered the parking lot, stopped behind the SUV, and entered the store in search of Chavez. While inside, the officer spotted Chavez running west in front of the business. He proceeded around the building and began heading east along Main Street.

Another officer caught up with Chavez in front of Golden Insurance Agency, at which time he stopped running and was placed under arrest. A glass methamphetamine pipe was found on his person.

Chavez was subsequently charged with the aggravated battery against a household member and false imprisonment – stemming from a Sept. 29, 2017, incident – for which a warrant had been issued, along with the additional charges of resisting, evading or obstructing a peace officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.
