Fern Hass, 96, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017, in Las Cruces.

Fern was born March 22, 1921. She moved to Artesia, where she taught school from 1954 until her retirement in 1980.

In 1962, the nation’s first underground school – Abo Elementary – was constructed in Artesia, and Fern taught there from the time it opened until her retirement.
