The Bulldogs’ and Lady Bulldogs’ top runners finished in the top eight of their 60-plus-runner fields last week at the annual Marquise’ Weast and Marcos Morillon Memorial Cross Country Meet at Jaycee Park.
Bulldog senior Eliazar Granillo finished fifth overall in the boys’ varsity race with a time of 16:14, while classmate Michaela Phipps took seventh in the varsity girls’ competition with a 19:31.
The Lady ‘Dogs finished third as a team out of a field of six that included Alamogordo, Lovington, Hagerman, Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. The Artesia boys were at the bottom of a 10-team field that included the above squads plus Carlsbad, Goddard, NMMI and Roswell High but delivered solid results individually.
Also placing in the top 20 for the Lady Bulldogs at the meet were Joslyn Madrid (12th, 20:20), Shelby Kramer (14th, 20:26) and Kimberlee Bennett (17th, 20:52), while Katelynn Sullivan (26th, 21:34) and Lexi Montgomery (37th, 22:45) rounded out the team’s effort.
The event marked just the second time this season the Bulldogs have entered a full varsity team in competition, and following Granillo’s performance were Coy Moorhead (49th, 18:46), Devon Harrison (57th, 19:48), Julian Martinez (60th, 20:32), Caleb Carnathan (63rd, 21:25), Emmet Clark (64th, 22:26) and Paul Ontiveros (65th, 23:21).
In girls’ JV action last week, Dania Jurado was 18th overall with a 25:04, Estefani Rodriguez 21st (25:17), Deimy Dominguez-Ortiz 31st (27:21), while in the boys’ JV race, Martin Saenz finished 60th (23:32).
The runners will now head to the Roswell/Goddard Invite Saturday before making the trek north to Rio Rancho Oct. 14 for their largest regular-season meet of the year.
