The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office is investigating today after a body was found near the railroad tracks along the Lake Arthur Highway.

ECSO deputies were dispatched around 8:40 a.m. today to the area of State Road 2 and Compress Road in reference to an individual who was unconscious and not breathing. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The ECSO Detective Division is investigating the incident as an unattended death, meaning all possibilities are being explored.

“We handle every unattended death as a homicide, and that’s not saying this is, but we handle them like that to make sure nothing is missed if that is eventually determined to be the cause of death,” Lt. Matt Hutchinson said today.

The Office of the Medical Investigator is also involved and will be performing the autopsy to determine exactly how the individual died.
