A Carlsbad man is in custody on charges relating to the death of an infant.

Eddy County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) deputies were dispatched just before 10 a.m. March 12 to 112 W. Peach Lane in Carlsbad in reference to an unconscious infant.

Paramedics transported the child to Carlsbad Medical Center, where it later died.

Following an extensive five-month investigation into the infant’s death by the ECSO Detective Division, a criminal complaint was filed.

Jared Bartels, 23, of Carlsbad, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of abandonment or abuse of a child resulting in death, a first-degree felony.

Bartels is being held without bail at the Eddy County Detention Center. If convicted, he faces a possible sentence of life in prison.
