The Artesia Police Department is investigating an early-morning shooting in the 1000 block of North Seventh Street that left a man severely wounded.

Officers were dispatched just before 12:30 a.m. to the area in reference to someone yelling for help. Upon arrival, they identified a male victim who had suffered several gunshot wounds to his extremities and lower torso.

The victim was transported to Artesia General Hospital, then airlifted to a trauma center. He is expected to recover.

The APD secured a crime scene, and several pieces of evidence were collected, according to Cmdr. Lindell Smith. Smith says there is no longer a police presence in the area.

Detectives will continue to follow leads and conduct interviews as they work to identify a suspect.
