Jose Ponce

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Jose M. Ponce of Artesia.

Ponce, 82, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2017, at San Pedro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Fr. Jorge Vargas will officiate the services, with interment to follow at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Anaya, Joe Sillas, Javyn Sillas, Luis Gabaldon, Damian Ochoa and Davian Ochoa.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday at Terpening & Son Mortuary. A rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Grace.

Jose was born April 9, 1935, in Shafter, Texas, to Pablo and Francisca (Martinez) Ponce. He was a longtime Artesia resident.

In October 1981, he married Manuela Tevarez in Artesia.

Jose was an assembly man for TMC and a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening, painting, playing bingo, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include daughters Hope Duckworth of Marlow, La., and Rebecca Peterson of La Grange, Texas; son Orlando Ponce of Snyder, Texas; sisters Vivian Ochoa and Eloisa Gabaldon-Peyo, both of Artesia; brother Paul Ponce Jr. of Roswell; and 21 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Manuela Ponce, on May 3, 2007; his parents; three sisters; and two brothers.
