Following recent social media reports of an individual being followed through Wal-Mart, the Artesia Police Department is urging citizens to take action to make themselves safe in such situations.

A Facebook post was recently shared amongst Artesia residents in which a woman detailed having been followed through the local store by a man she did not know.

Cmdr. Lindell Smith of the APD says he has been unable to locate any record of a police report being filed on the incident, but he offered the following advice for individuals who may find themselves in a similar situation.

“Find a way to make yourself feel safe,” Smith said. “Bring it to the attention of a Wal-Mart employee, ask someone for help, drive to the police department or the sheriff’s office, drive to your work… go somewhere where you’re going to feel safe and where you can contact people or the police and say, ‘This is happening, please help me.’ Don’t just leave it up in the air.”
