TO THE EDITOR:

One of our County Commissioners was recently heard to say, “We could have raised your property tax but didn’t. You should be thankful!”

A neighbor of mine just looked at his latest Eddy County Property Tax notice and the commissioner is right, he found no rate increase. However, he did find a whopping increase in the assessed value of his property. THAT IS A TAX INCREASE, COMMISSIONER!!!!

This same commissioner recently stated, “I am tired of Mayor Burch and the residents of Artesia complaining about the County Commission.” Well Commissioner, I am tired of these “Smoke and Mirror” tax tactics of this County Manager and Commission.

And now you have passed three more tax increase ordinances to become effective on Jan. 1, 2018. No wonder the RAFT (Residents Against Frivolous Taxes) organization is out getting petitions signed to force the Commission to put these new taxes on a ballot for voter approval before making them final.

The residents of Eddy County are getting mugged by this Commission and deserve the opportunity to vote for or against these new taxes. I encourage all Eddy County registered voters to join this effort by signing a petition. There are only a few weeks until the deadline is reached, so we need to get busy NOW to find and sign a petition to force the Commission to put these tax ordinances on a ballot.

Let the voters make the decision!!
