Burl Williams

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, June 29, at Combest Family Memorial Chapel in Lubbock, Texas, for Burl Williams of Lubbock.

Williams, 99, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Interment will follow the services at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Cemetery in Lubbock.

Visitation will precede the services at 9 a.m. at Combest Family Memorial Chapel.

Burl was born Oct. 10, 1917, in Eastland, Texas, to Curt and Gertrude (Hudson) Williams. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-45 during World War II.

On July 26, 1945, he married Martha Ann Howard in Mineral Wells, Texas, and together, they began their family.

Burl was the owner of Pay Day Grocery Store in Eunice from 1947-74, during which time he also owned a furniture store in Eunice from 1964-74. He then began his retirement.

He served as a Lea County commissioner and was one of four founding members of the Frontier Country Club, assisting with the construction and development of a nine-hole golf course in three days.

While in Eunice, Burl was a member of the Eunice Church of Christ. In 2000, he moved to Abilene, Texas, where he was a member of the Oldham Lane Church of Christ; he then moved to Lubbock in 2010, where he was a member of Greenlawn Church of Christ.

Survivors include son Glen Williams and wife Denise of Noble, Okla.; daughters Sherry Wilburn and husband Jim, and Glenda Hicks and husband Ed, both of Lubbock; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews Chuck Williams and wife Dorothy, Jill Wright and husband Dwayne, and Carroll Duncan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brother A.C. Williams and wife Virginia; niece Pat Duncan; and nephew Mike Williams.
