A memorial service and celebration of life is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Burkhart Funeral Home in Crawfordsville, Ind., for Robert “Bob” Benjamin Walters of Cary, N.C.
Walters, 93, passed away Friday, June 2, 2017, in Cary.
Rev. Richard Kassel will officiate at the services. A graveside service will follow at Freedom Cemetery in Waveland, Ind.
Bob was born Feb. 4, 1924, on his grandparent’s farm near Panhandle, Texas, the son of Leslie A. and Nellie (Jackson) Walters. He graduated from Panhandle High School in 1941.
Bob was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served as a high-speed radio operator in the 22nd Ground Observation Platoon, 596th Signal Air Warning Battalion in New Guinea and the Philippines. After the war, he attended Purdue University, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.
He spent his career as a chemical engineer and was a project manager with Commercial Solvents Corp. and International Minerals & Chemicals Corp.
On May 7, 1950, he was united in marriage with his college sweetheart, Harriet Ruth Hillabold, at Freedom Baptist Church in Waveland. Together, they established a loving home and raised three daughters.
The couple lived for many years in Terre Haute, Ind., where they were members of First Baptist Church. After moving to Monroe, La., and Lakeland, Fla., they retired to Cary.
Harriet preceded Bob in death Jan. 28, 2000. On Oct. 18, 2002, he married Mary Jo (Lochridge) Guy in Dallas, Texas. They lived in Artesia and were blessed with almost 10 years of marriage before Mary Jo’s death Aug. 7, 2012. Since that time, Bob has made his home with his daughter, Martha, and her family in Cary and attended Grace Community Church of Cary.
Bob loved his Lord and his family. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who will be remembered for his steadfast faith and devotion.
Survivors include daughters Gretta Gramley and husband Ken of Westfield, Ind., Sue Purschwitz and husband Mark of Georgetown, Ky., and Martha Christie and husband Sam of Cary; grandchildren Dan Purschwitz and wife Kara, Jim Purschwitz and wife Johnna, Michael and Elizabeth Gramley, and Samuel and Stephen Christie; great-granddaughters Hattie and Sophia Purschwitz; stepsons Joe Guy of Dallas and Eddie Guy and wife Debbie of Artesia; step-grandchildren Dani Kuykendall and husband Chris, Reggie Guy and wife Staci, and Graham Guy and wife Kindra; step-great-grandchildren Jackson, Mollie and Joleigh Guy, and Gracen and Daegan Kuykendall; brother Harold Walters and wife Donna of Hutchinson, Kans.; and sister Pat Wakefield of St. Peters, Mo.
In addition to his wives, Harriet and Mary Jo, he was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and two sisters.
