Artesia Police Department officers were dispatched May 20 to the 1100 block of West Mann Avenue in reference to a stabbing. Officers observed two stab wounds – one in the left side of the abdomen and one in the chest – on the male victim, who was transported to Artesia General Hospital.
There, he was determined to be in critical condition and airlifted to Lubbock, Texas.
Officers were able to speak with the victim’s wife, who, along with her children, witnessed the incident.
The wife stated she had given her cousin, identified as Louis Duran III, 32, of Artesia, a ride back to her residence. When they arrived, her husband exited the home and inquired as to Duran’s identity; the wife identified him as her cousin.
According to the report, the woman told police that as she was removing her children from the vehicle, Duran approached her husband, and a fight ensued on the porch. She stated she chased Duran off the property, and he rode away on his bicycle.
She and her husband entered the home, saw a large amount of blood, and noticed the husband had been stabbed.
A warrant was subsequently issued for Duran’s arrest, and he was taken into custody Sunday morning on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony.
