A local Girl Scout troop showed their appreciation for those sworn to serve and protect during Police Appreciation Week with the presentation of care packages.
Troop 20879 honored the 31 officers in the Artesia Police Department with the packages, which included a variety of items ranging from coffee packets and lip balm to hand sanitizer and candy. The packages also included a note, which read:
“Dear Officer, I want you to know that I see you. I see you choose the booth in the restaurant that allows you to have your back against the wall. I see you walking to your next traffic stop while you hope that it isn’t your last. I see you pulled over, two hours past your shift, as you finish your reports in the scorching heat, the gusting snow, and the downpour of rain. I see you being filmed every time you try to do your job. I see the mainstream media crucify your character while minimizing your cause. I see that you are tired. I see that you are frustrated and misunderstood.
“I see that you are hurting as the world watches you bury your brothers and sisters that die because they’re guilty of one thing: wearing a uniform with a badge. I see you. I see that you are flesh and bones just like me. I see that you are a human being who has a heart that beats for your calling to serve and protect. I see your cause and I want you to know that I appreciate it.”
The Scouts also attached significance to the pieces of candy included in the care packages:
Life Saver to remind you of the many times you have been one; Smarties to give you wisdom for the split-second decisions; Starburst for the burst of energy you need; Hershey’s Kisses to show our love for you; gum to help everyone stick together; Tootsie Roll to help you roll with the punches; peppermint patty to help you keep your cool; Dum-Dum because you deal with a lot of them; PayDay because you’re not doing it for the money; and Laffy Taffy to remind you that laughter is a great stress reliever.
