A funeral mass is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Susie (Rodriguez) Gomez of Artesia.
Gomez, 87, passed away Monday, April 24, 2017, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers.
Fr. Jorge S. Vargas will officiate at the services, with interment to follow at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be her sons-in-law, Lalo Carrera, Luis Mendoza, Rick Mendoza, Jorge Avitia and Stephen Rader.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. today at Terpening & Son Mortuary. A rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Grace.
From her birth Nov. 12, 1929, in Cottonwood to her death Monday, Susie nourished people around her with love, faith and compassion.
She was born on a farm to Basilio and Manuela (Calderon) Rodriguez and was the youngest of 12 children. At a very young age, Susie worked on the farm with her parents and all of her siblings.
It was Susie’s smile and beauty that attracted Manuel Gomez to her in 1953. On Dec. 21, 1953, they married in Artesia.
Left to honor Susie and remember her example of a true lady and mother are her eight children, 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A homemaker and an office assistant at the Abo Apartments, Susie was a faithful Catholic and member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. She enjoyed dancing, camping, exercising, and cooking many family favorite dishes.
Survivors include children Sylvia Carrera and husband Lalo of Roswell, Armando Gomez, Basilio Gomez, Maria Mendoza and husband Luis, Cory Mendoza and husband Rick of Artesia, Manuel Gomez and wife Yvonne of Hobbs, Connie Avitia and husband Jorge of Artesia, and Rosie Rader and husband Stephen of Lewisville, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Manuel Gomez, on Aug. 23, 2016; daughter Alicia on June 8, 2016; her parents; and 11 siblings.
The Gomez family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to her caregivers, Norma Salcido, Norma Renteria and Carolina Melendez, for all of the help, support and comfort they offered to Susie.
