Danny Winters

Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Harvest Fellowship Church for Danny Joe Winters of West Mann Avenue, Artesia.

Winters, 73, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at his home.

Chaplain Terry McKean of Lakeview Christian Hospice will officiate at the services. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of West Funeral Home of Carlsbad.

Danny was born March 20, 1944, in Carlsbad to Carl and Emma (Jump) Winters. He was raised in Carlsbad and graduated from Carlsbad High School. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Danny lived in Chicago, Ill., for 20 years, where he was employed by TWA Airlines. He then relocated to Artesia and worked in insurance sales for many years, as well as working as a hunting and fishing guide. In recent years, Danny enjoyed working as the doorman at Adobe Rose Restaurant.

He had a talent and passion for creating beautiful walking sticks and became known around Artesia as “The Walking Stick Man” as a result of his artistry. His favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing.

Danny was a past member of the Moose Lodge, Artesia Bow Masters, Cottonwood Shooting Club, and Pecos Valley Bass Masters, and a past volunteer with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program.

Survivors include sons Jon and Andy Winters, both of Houston, Texas; brothers Jerry Winters of Dallas, Ga., and Freddy Winters of Burleson, Texas; and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carolyn Babcock.
