TO THE EDITOR:

Thank you for an outstanding home newspaper!!

My mother, Margaret E. Merritt, is having her 95th birthday on April 21. She has had a long association with Artesia and your paper.

She and my father, Don Merritt, settled in ranching country near Pinon when they married in 1934. We shopped and banked in Roswell and Artesia. Then, when our school in Pinon was consolidated and closed, my parents chose to take us to Hope to school for a couple of years. Then we had a home in Artesia, and all four of us – Hilton, Jane, Ann and Leah – graduated from Artesia High School while still ranching in the mountains.

Subsequently, Mom wrote a column of news and her ramblings for The Hitchin’ Post, Mountain Monthly, and Artesia Daily Press for a number of years after the death of local columnist Oza Gentry.

Mom now resides in Lubbock, Texas, with daughter Ann Hannel and husband Dub. We invite friends and neighbors to send birthday wishes, memories, and family updates to her at this address:
