Ashly Letcher

When I was a little girl, I wanted two things: a flip hairdo and to be Miss America.

I did achieve the flip hairdo (until my mom caught me in her bathroom), but I never did get around to winning the Miss America crown!

Ashly Letcher was crowned Miss Artesia 2017 at the Miss Pecos Valley Scholarship Pageant on March 4, the first step towards becoming the 2017 Miss America. Ashly will compete for the title of Miss New Mexico in June, and if she wins that crown will compete for the Miss America title later this year.

Winning these titles isn’t easy — contestants must demonstrate a genuine commitment to public service and be a positive role model for others. Public speaking skills and poise are important, and of course there are the talent, swimsuit, evening wear, and interview competitions also.

Stamina is important too — Miss America travels approximately 20,000 miles a month, changing her location every 24 to 48 hours, all in high heels! We’re already working on the 2018 competition, so stayed tuned — and be sure to root for Ashly as she works her way up the pageant ladder.
