A Carlsbad man was killed Saturday morning in a fatal Commercial Motor Vehicle accident near Malaga.

The New Mexico State Police report John Mason Jr., 69, of Carlsbad, was traveling on CR 725 south of Malaga around 9 a.m. Saturday when the semi truck he was driving veered off the roadway and struck a guard rail protecting an above-ground pipeline shutoff valve.

Mason sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wreck remains under investigation.
