The Roswell Police Department has identified the man who shot and killed himself following a confrontation with officers over a stolen car and is actively seeking a woman wanted for questioning in relation to the incident.

Shayne Romero, 30, of Peralta, fired shots at an RPD officer early Wednesday morning in front of the Motel 6 in Roswell as he attempted to flee on foot after the officer questioned him regarding a car reported stolen in Albuquerque.

The officer returned fire, wounding Romero, who dropped to the sidewalk alongside the motel. As officers ordered him to drop his weapon, Romero instead shot himself in the head.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The RPD says a female seen inside the stolen vehicle fled during the shooting, and police are now seeking her for questioning.

Lexi Montanez, believed to be of Los Lunas, may still be in the Roswell area. Anyone with information as to her whereabouts is urged to call the RPD at 624-6770.
