Eddy County 4-H youth, parents and club leaders were able to get a glimpse of government in action Feb. 7 as they attended the first session of the 53rd Legislature in Santa Fe.

Members present included Madeline Clark, Maddisun Mancha, Kurt Klingshirn, Shana Elkins, Taylor Martinez, Bryce Bain, and Alondra Gomez. Parents and leaders were Casie Spain, Melissa Bain, Susan Klingshirn, Travis Walker, Camille Figueroa, Esmeralda Gomez, and 4-H agent Wayne Shockey.

The group met with legislators from Eddy County and discussed the importance of 4-H in their communities. They also toured the capital and were honored guests of Sen. Gay Kernan and Sen. Carroll Leavell on the Senate floor during the legislative session.

More importantly, the youth learned how the New Mexico House and Senate work and how bills are passed. They also learned how many senators and representatives are in the House and Senate and the requirements to become a legislator.

Eddy County 4-H would like to personally thank Kernan and Leavell, Sens. Ron Griggs and Cliff Pirtle, and Reps. Jim Townsend and Cathrynn Brown for the time they took out of their days to visit with the youth of Eddy County and discuss the important topics with which they as legislators are involved.
