An Artesia man was arrested Monday after threatening Artesia Police Department officers with both a piece of a pellet pistol and a pipe.

Officers were checking the area in the 800 block of West Cannon Avenue just before 1 p.m. Monday following a report of a disturbance when they saw a subject wearing dark clothing and a hood walking south on North Eighth Street.

The subject, later identified as Cruz Munoz of Artesia, turned toward the patrol vehicle and removed a black object from his waistband. He then pointed it at the officers as one would aim a handgun.

Officers drew their weapons, and Munoz threw the object onto the ground, then drew an approximately three-foot-long piece of one-inch pipe from his waistband and raised it over his head while advancing toward the officers.

Munoz eventually dropped the pipe, as well, but refused repeated commands to get on the ground. Officers deployed both cartridges of a Taser with minimal effect, and Munoz continued to attempt to walk away. Officers were able to drive stun Munoz with the Taser in order to bring him to the ground.

Munoz reportedly fought and spit at officers as they attempted to search him but was eventually secured.

Upon investigation, officers found the initial object Munoz had pointed at them like a handgun was the lower receiver from a pellet pistol. During a search of his person, they also recovered several homemade knives and shanks.

Munoz has been scheduled in Artesia Magistrate Court for a Feb. 15 preliminary examination on charges of aggravated assault upon a peace officer.
