Artesia Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Crit Caton announced Monday that Lowell Irby and David Conklin would be seeking re-election to the APS Board of Education.
Artesia city councilor Luis Flores will be running for the seat currently held by Margaret Aguilar, who will not be seeking reelection. All three members are running unopposed in their respective districts in the Feb. 7 school board election.
In other business Monday, the board elected to renew Caton’s contract with the APS for another year, which he accepted.
Assistant Superintendent of Personnel and Student Services John Ross Null presented to the board a preliminary calendar for the 2017-18 school year, stating he will be seeking input from staff and the Parent Advisory Council, as well as from the board members, before bringing a finalized calendar to the board for their approval next month.
Assistant Superintendent of Operations Thad Phipps sought the board’s approval to renew the contract for network monitoring services for the remainder of the fiscal year in the amount of $30,000. The contract was approved by the board.
Phipps also sought approval to purchase a new pole vault landing system for the schools’ track and field program. The landing system will include base padding, angled padding, a weather cover, vault box, and standards. The system will be purchase from AK Sales for a total price of $29,931.19. The purchase was approved by the board.
Business Manager Janet Grice’s monthly bills, budget reports, fixed assets report, and budget adjustments were also approved by the board.
Caton announced the retirement of Sherrie Bratcher, Spanish teacher at Artesia High School, effective at the end of the current school year; the resignation of LaVerne Obenhaus, business teacher at Artesia High School, also effective at the end of the current school year; and the employment of Amy Dean as the school secretary at Yeso Elementary School, Martha Leon as a custodian at Grand Heights Early Childhood Center, and Nora Sanchez as a school counselor for one day per week at Zia Intermediate School.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the school board will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13.
