TO THE EDITOR:

It has come to the attention of the Artesia Police Department that a partner of ours in the realm of public safety, the Eddy County DWI Program, is drastically short of funding.

Latest estimations connected with budget shortfalls for the state and trickling down to the program are close to $300,000 this year. This important program, run by Ms. Cindy Sharif and her staff, handles the following aspects of DWI prevention for the county of Eddy: prevention, enforcement, screening/assessment, treatment/tracking and coordination/planning.

If you would care to see an example of the type and quality of educational programs the organization puts on and/or sponsors, please consider arranging to be a guest at a session of the DWI Supplemental Education class or treatment counseling offered by the program. These educational programs, although most of the time court ordered, offer a chance for presenters and formally trained educators and counselors to relate to offenders in an intimate setting, something they may not have realized before; there are dangers and impacts that impaired driving has not only on oneself but perhaps on people they have never even met.

We realize that funding for nearly everyone is short these days, but whether your organization is public or private, I ask that you consider making a donation or offering to help in some other way to keep this vital, safety based program afloat for our county.

Any questions concerning what, exactly, can be done to help can be directed to Ms. Sharif at the following addresses and phone numbers:
