Hattie Spain

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at West Main Baptist Church for Hattie Spain of Artesia.

Spain, 96, passed away peacefully at her home Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016.

An interment service is also scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.

Visitation will be held from 2­6 p.m. today at Terpening & Son Mortuary.

Hattie was born Jan. 6, 1920, in Brownwood, Texas, the daughter of Grover C. and Minnie (Presley) Smith.

On July 31, 1937, she married George Alston Spain in Carrizozo.

Hattie moved to Artesia in 1987 from Roswell. She was a longtime member of West Main Baptist Church and was a cook for several different hospitals before her retirement. She enjoyed going to lunch with her friends, sewing, crocheting, and embroidery. Everybody called her Granny.

Survivors include sons Bobby Spain and wife Sandra of Westminster, Calif., and Jerry Spain and wife Michelle of Clarksburg, Calif.; daughters Sue McCormick and husband Tim of Pinon and Sharon Newton and husband Gary of Artesia; 19 grandchildren, 15 great ­grand children and seven great­ great­ grand children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Spain, on May 7, 1984; her parents; sons Johnny Spain, Donald Ray Spain, and Kelly Joe Spain; and grandchildren David Spain and Shiloh Newton.

Arrangements are under the direction of Terpening & Son Mortuary.
