The married couple found deceased last week at their home in the 800 block of Hermosa Drive have been identified and their manner of death determined.

The Artesia Police Department on Saturday identified the two individuals as David and Gretchen Matlock, longtime residents of Artesia. Their bodies were discovered on the morning of Monday, Oct. 3.

Following a thorough investigation of the scene by the APD and autopsies of the bodies, it was determined the deaths appear to be a murder-suicide.

Cmdr. Lindell Smith of the APD says a gun with two spent casings was found at the scene. Gretchen Matlock appeared to have passed first. She was reported to be suffering from a terminal illness.

“As you can imagine, the emotions surrounding an incident such as this are sensitive for the family,” said Smith. “APD understands this and hopes the family and friends of the couple can find peace and closure as a result of what is likely an ongoing grief process.”
