The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) are investigating a wreck in Lea County that claimed the lives of two individuals.

NMSP officers responded at approximately 10 a.m. Sunday to the scene of an accident on S.R. 128, mile marker 47, northwest of Jal, involving two semi trucks.

Initial investigation revealed one semi was travelling eastbound at what appeared to be a high rate of speed on S.R. 128 when it came upon a second semi that had slowed in the roadway in order to make a right-hand turn. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the speeding semi swerved into the westbound lane, striking a third, oncoming semi head-on.

Both semis burst into flames upon collision, and the driver of each sustained fatal injuries. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the first semi was identified as David Elvis Holt, 62, of Bastrop, Texas. The driver of the semi into which Holt collided was identified as Ever Menchaca, 40, of Hobbs. The driver of the semi Holt swerved to avoid was uninjured.

The NMSP says alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the wreck, which remains under investigation.
