The Artesia City Council will convene for a special meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Council Chambers at City Hall.

The council will be considering an ordinance amending Ordinance No. 823 concerning the city’s “hold harmless” Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) funds.

Concerns over the State of New Mexico’s scramble to find revenue wherever it can in the face of the budget shortfall prompted the meeting. The state could potentially recall municipalities’ hold harmless distributions except in such cases where the municipalities have pledged those funds against a bond or other debt.

The amendment up for consideration Tuesday would commit Artesia’s hold harmless money to the bill for the Public Safety Complex.

The council will also consider a resolution authorizing Mayor Phillip Burch to execute an FAA grant agreement.
