Artesia joined the nation in celebrating the 240th anniversary of the establishment of the United States Monday with a parade, recreational events, barbecues and more, all culminating in a professional fireworks display at Jaycee Park.

A member of one of the area’s volunteer fire departments works to loosen a valve on a fire hydrant Monday during the annual Firefighters’ Olympics at Jaycee Park. Several fire departments competed in agility-testing events, including this one, which tested teams’ speed in connecting a hose to a hydrant as they controlled the water stream in order to hit a target several yards away.
