The Artesia Police Department is investigating a body found this morning at the Eagle Draw bridge near Main Street and Centennial Drive.

Cmdr. Lindell Smith reports APD detectives are working the scene as a homicide, which is standard procedure. Detectives will be collecting evidence and working closely with the Office of the Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death.

“The possible causes are always either homicide, suicide, accidental, natural or unknown,” Smith said. “The manner of death is determined by forensic medical professionals upon examination of all facts and circumstances that are gathered.”

The APD was called to the scene of another unattended death Wednesday in the area of Fourth Street and Hermosa Drive. Further details on that incident are currently unavailable, but Smith said the two deaths have “no appearance at this point of being related.”

Additional details will be published as they become available.
