Artesia Police Department officers and EMS crews work the scene of a traffic accident early Monday afternoon that resulted in the death of a local woman. The APD was dispatched at 1:16 p.m. Monday to Second Street and Hermosa Drive in reference to a two-vehicle collision. According to APD Cmdr. Lindell Smith, the wreck occurred when a 2005 Ford pickup, travelling east on Hermosa, collided with a 2002 Pontiac emerging from a private drive in the area. The driver of the Pontiac, an 83-year-old woman, was transported to Artesia General Hospital and eventually airlifted with significant head injuries. She later succumbed to those injuries. The drive of the Ford, a 38-year-old male, reported no injuries and was arrested on scene for driving on a revoked license and cited for driving without insurance. “Alcohol or speed do not appear to be factors,” Smith said, and neither vehicle contained passengers.
