The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in the 14-year-old murder of a Carlsbad woman.

The ECSO called a press conference this afternoon to announce the arrest of Jeremey J. Melendrez on the charge of homicide in the 2002 killing of Sasha Hedgecock.

Hedgecock was found alive with multiple gunshot wounds on Christmas Day 2002 by ECSO deputies at the intersection of Fiesta and Thomason in Carlsbad. She was airlifted to Lubbock, Texas, where she later died.

Over the course of the next 14 years, multiple detectives and investigators worked to locate a suspect. Advancements in DNA analysis and more stringent DNA laws finally resulted in the identification of Melendrez as a suspect.

Melendrez is currently being held at the GEO Prison in Hobbs on a $500,000 bond.
