TO THE EDITOR:

I am writing to express my endorsement for County Commissioner Royce Pearson’s reelection for District 2.

I have known Royce Pearson to be a very ethical and caring man; he cares about Artesia because he is from here. He works just like all the rest of us, and wants to see Artesia grow and be successful; he is not a politician living on family money. Royce Pearson knows the struggle we all face in this economy raising kids, working, and budgeting what we have. I feel that this is important in a county commissioner.

Royce supports law enforcement and the oil industry as evidenced by the letter of support opposing the BLM flaring rules that the county is working on; he is a conservative with strong values.

A few years ago, I contacted Royce and gave him a tour of Esperanza House (now called Artesia Advocacy Center). I explained to him the work we do in the community with regards to child abuse and sexual assault. Royce Pearson helped me figure out how to approach the county to ask for funding and supported our organization in getting funding from the county. These funds have been vital in keeping these services available to county residents. Services like forensic interviews for child victims of child abuse and services to both adult and child victims of sexual assault.

Royce could have passed me off to someone else, but he didn’t. He could have stuck his head in the sand, essentially saying “those things don’t happen in Artesia,” but he didn’t. Royce stood for Artesia and supported keeping those services here because he knew they were vital and needed in our county.

We need Royce Pearson to continue working on our behalf in Eddy County, and that is why I am endorsing him for reelection of District 2.

Sincerely,
Sara Burnside
