The New Mexico State Police report a Hobbs man was killed early this morning in an accident on State Road 18.

The NMSP responded at approximately 3 a.m. today to the scene of a wreck near mile marker 48 on SR 18 south of Hobbs. Initial investigation revealed a southbound vehicle, driven by Rene Caraveo, 17, of Hobbs, swerved in an attempt to avoid striking a dog. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which overturned several times.

Caraveo’s passenger, 18-year-old Wesley Leija of Hobbs, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Caraveo sustained injuries and was transported to Lea Regional Hospital. The accident remains under investigation.
