Both the Bulldog and Lady Bulldog track and field teams added a new state qualification to their list Friday at the Ron Singleton Invitational in Carlsbad.
Competing against solid fields that included Odessa High, Class 6A Carlsbad, Clovis and Manzano, and Roswell, Lovington and Silver, the ‘Dogs bumped their number of qualified field events to four and the Lady ‘Dogs to three while re-qualifying in a trio of other events.
Both new qualifications came in the high jump, with senior Christian Lopez clearing a third-place height of six feet for the Bulldogs and eighth-grader Elliot Harrison taking fourth with a five-foot leap for the Lady Bulldogs.
Lady ‘Dog senior Victoria Acosta also re-qualified in the 300-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 47.33, and Tori Collins and Justin Houghtaling re-qualified in the girls’ shot put and boys’ javelin respectively with second- and third-place throws of 35’10” and 164’1.5”.
The ‘Dogs finished fourth and the Lady Bulldogs fifth overall on the evening.
Picking up first-place points for the Artesia boys was Caleb Brewer in the long jump with a 20’1” leap, while Raina Wesson topped the field in the girls’ 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.44.
Emilio Garcia was second in the pole vault at 12’, as was Brewer in the triple jump (40’10”), and Lauren Robson finished in the runner-up spot in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:29.35.
With three regular-season meets remaining, including Friday’s Wildcat Relays in Clovis and the April 22 Artesia Invitational, the Bulldogs have six athletes on their state meet docket and the Lady Bulldogs four.
Following the Artesia Invite, the teams will close out the regular season at the Ross Black Relays in Lovington April 29 before heading back to Lovington May 6 for the District 4-AAAAA Meet. The Class 5A State Meet is set for May 13-14 in Albuquerque.
