U.S. Sens. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., are now accepting applications for nominations to U.S. military service academies.
Throughout April and May, members of the senators’ staff will also host information sessions across the state for high school students and recent graduates who are interested in applying to enter an academy in the fall of 2017.
Four of the five service academies — the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy — require a congressional, vice-presidential or service-connected nomination as part of the application process. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a nomination.
“Each year, I have the privilege of nominating some of the best and brightest young people from across New Mexico to our nation’s military service academies,” Udall said. “The service academy information sessions offer a great opportunity to learn more about the nominating process and to meet with representatives from the academies and New Mexico collegiate ROTC programs.”
“These opportunities provide exceptional education and training that prepare students for leadership roles in our armed forces as well as the skills needed to succeed after military service,” said Heinrich.
U.S. military service academies are among the most competitive colleges in the nation and provide those who enroll with excellent education and opportunities for leadership in both military and civilian life.
Students have until Oct. 14, to submit an application for either senator’s nomination. Prospective applicants are encouraged to begin the application process well in advance.
Applications to Udall can be submitted online at tomudall.senate.gov/academy. Applications to Heinrich may be submitted at heinrich.senate.gov/helping-you/academy.
Udall’s staff will host an information session from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at the Roswell High School Little Theater, 500 W. Hobbs St., Roswell. Heinrich’s staff will be in Clovis from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at the Clovis High School Lecture Hall, 1900 N. Thornton St.
