SCIENTIST WINS REGIONAL – Artesia High School senior LaNette Irby, 17, stands by her winning science fair entry. The first AHS student to win in four years, Irby took second place and is now qualified to attend the state fair April 18 in Socorro. The project, which evolved from a study Irby began on the ecology of Brantley Dam, tested water samples from six sources, including the Pecos River and Lake McMillan. The results of the study: “Area water is extremely hard and has low productivity,” says Irby, “and is primarily only good for recreational use.” (1986 Kristine Seher File Photo)
