Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, at James Canyon Cemetery west of Mayhill for Steven Singletary-Casares of Mayhill.
Casares, 84, passed away peacefully March 18, 2016, in Roswell.
Pallbearers will be Eric Casares, Michael Casares, Anthony Ponce, Ricky Ponce, Joseph Ponce and Brandon Hinds. Honorary pallbearers are his many grandsons.
Steven was born Aug. 3, 1934, in Donna, Texas, to Ramon Casares and Antonia Singletary-Casares. He spent most of his life as a resident of Mayill.
He worked as a rancher and truck driver, and also proudly served his country in the United States Army.
In his spare time, Steven enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with his wife and 16 children. He was very outgoing, and his family liked to say he never met a stranger.
Steven left a great legacy and will be missed by many.
Survivors include his children’s mother, Consuelo Casares, of Artesia; children Rodrigo Casares and wife Chuya, Connie Vasquez, Tammy Ponce and husband Abel, Steve Casares Jr. and wife Camie, Lola Casares, and Barbara Casares, all of Artesia, Connie Castillo of Truth or Consequences, Sammy Casares of El Paso, Texas, Peggie Baggerly and husband Phillip of Oklahoma, Mary Williams and husband James Robert of Las Cruces, Paul Casares of Carlsbad, and Eric Casares and Julie Hinds and husband Roy, both of Roswell; brother Lupe Casares of Mescalero; sisters Ninfa Davis, Toni Cowger, Mona Devara and Maria Casares, all of Mayhill; more than 60 grandchildren; more than 80 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Antonia Casares; son Benny J. Casares; daughter Consuelo Zambrano; granddaughter Cassandra O. Chavarria; grandson Isaiah Hernandez; and nephew Earl Cowger Jr.
