The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the individual found deceased Sunday at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).

At approximately 8:43 p.m. Sunday, the Regional Emergency Dispatch Authority was alerted to an unconscious individual at the WIPP, who was later determined to be deceased by WIPP medical and security personnel.

ECSO Chief Deputy Mark Cage reports the man has been identified as Robert B. Staffel Jr., 62, of Carlsbad. Staffel was an employee of the WIPP.

The incident remains under investigation by the ECSO Detective Division.
