A Dexter man is dead following a two-vehicle accident that occurred Thursday evening near Roswell.

At around 8 p.m. Thursday, officers with the New Mexico State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement responded to a wreck involving a commercial motor vehicle and a passenger vehicle. The crash occurred at the intersection of U.S. 285 and Orchard Park Road (Chaves County Road 59), south of Roswell.

The preliminary investigation indicated the commercial vehicle was traveling north on U.S. 285 when a Toyota Camry, traveling west on Orchard Park Road, failed to stop at a posted stop sign. The Camry continued onto 285 directly in front of the commercial vehicle, causing it to strike the Camry.

The driver of the Camry, identified as Kevin Atkinson, 23, of Dexter, sustained fatal injuries in the wreck and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the commercial vehicle was transported to Eastern New Mexico Regional Medical Center in Roswell for minor injuries.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in this wreck. The accident is still under investigation, and no further details are available at this time.
