A Roswell man is dead and four people injured following a traffic accident that occurred Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of 13th Street and West Compress Road.

Authorities were dispatched just before 4 p.m. Tuesday to the scene of a wreck between a Ford pickup truck and Ford Mustang.

According to the New Mexico State Police, the preliminary investigation indicated the Mustang had been travelling eastbound on Compress Road and failed to stop at the posted sign, striking the pickup, which was headed south on 13th.

The driver of the Mustang, later identified as Ernest Tricarico, 50, of Roswell, sustained fatal injuries. He was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

One passenger in the Mustang was airlifted to Roswell Regional Medical Center. Two other passengers, including a 5-month-old child, were transported to Artesia General Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the pickup was also transported to AGH with minor injuries.

The NMSP indicated alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. The wreck remains under investigation.
