“We’ve updated the salon,” said Gilbert. “We’ve redirected who we are as a salon, and I think that’s paid off just in the past six months, big time, in our service and what we have to offer.”
Expressions opened in 2001, and Gilbert bought the business in 2003. She, along with manager/stylist Angie Jarratt and their combined 41 years of experience in the field, operate the business with five other stylists, two nail techs, a receptionist/aesthetician, a massage therapist and, soon to be added, a permanent makeup cosmetologist.
Gilbert says she has a mixture of experience between her stylists, from just beginning to 10-plus years, which gives the customer tried and true methods as well as the latest techniques.
The salon offers massage therapy from therapists Haylee Neel, nail care from nail techs Nicolette Knowlton and Gilbert, who will be returning to the salon part-time to do nails late afternoons by appointment during the week and all day Saturdays. Specialized skincare treatments are available from receptionist/aesthetician Johnnie Marquez, all the latest hairstyles by stylists Priscilla Quinones, Celene Sepulveda, Jordan Ezell, Jarratt, Janett Lopez, Meghan Harris and Brenda Jaquez, and the latest in permanent makeup coming soon from Stephanie Gomez.
Gilbert grew up in Colorado and came to Artesia to bring her children closer to their grandparents, and Jarratt grew up in Carlsbad and has been in Artesia more than 10 years now. They are most proud of their atmosphere and the fact that, as Gilbert says, “we are becoming a family and not with just us girls, but with our customers as well.”
“I am so proud of the salon and my girls, and the wonderful work they do. They are all so talented but they are also beautiful inside and out, and our customers know that.”
One need only read some of the reviews the shop has received to know how its customers feel about the service they provide.
“That little hottie Angie Jarratt fixes my hair, and it always gets me kisses from the hubby! She must be doing something right!” said Becca Rickman Owens.
“I am very picky about my hair and nails. Expressions is the best place in town!” said Kristy Crockett. “Angie Jarratt does an amazing job with my hair, and Nicolette Knowlton is the only person I trust with my hands and feet.”
“Meghan Harris is the bomb!” exclaimed Abby Bean Archer. “Her ability to mastermind the entire color wheel is amazing!”
Expressions is a full-service family salon located at 1102 N. First St. Their full staff of licensed professionals offer a wide range of beauty services and products, including hair, nails, pedicures, waxing, hair extensions, ear piercing, and specialized skincare treatments.
“As a salon, we are really striving to be a place where you feel loved when you come in,” said Jarratt. “We really feel like God is the center of our salon.”
