The Bulldog volleyball team closed out its 2015 regular season on a winning note Oct. 29 at Bulldog Pit, completing a sweep of the Wildcats of Lovington with a three-game win, 25-23, 25-7 and 25-9.

The ‘Cats came out strong, taking the opening bout down to the wire, but the ‘Dogs found their feet and dominated the remainder of the match.

“We made a few errors in that first game, but we did everything right in the next two,” said head coach Alan Williams. “The result was great for us.”

The ‘Dogs got 13 kills on the night from senior Jenna Butcher and 11 from sophomore Gracie Puentes. Butcher also added four solo blocks, Kacey Thurman 14 digs, Justena Galindo and Alexa Riggs 12 apiece, and Kaylea Lopez 11, and Galindo 27 assists.

Artesia (13-7) closed out its regular-season District 4-AAAAA slate with a record of 3-3, good enough for the runner-up spot heading into this week’s District 4 Tournament.

The Bulldogs will host the winner of Lovington versus Goddard at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bulldog Pit.

“That was certainly a fun game to end the regular season on,” said Williams. “It’s the third season now, and I just hope to see us continue to improve. Hopefully, we’ll be able to beat Goddard or Lovington Thursday and get another shot at Roswell.”
