The Lady Bulldog soccer team wasn’t quite able to fulfill its goal of keeping Tuesday’s game against county rival Carlsbad from playing out predominantly on their half of the field, but considering the amount of time the Cavegirls spent there, Artesia’s play was impressive nonetheless.
The Lady ‘Dogs held Carlsbad at bay despite being outshot 16-4 in the first half and, with the exception of brief moments early and late in the second 40 minutes, did the same there, as well.
Unfortunately, those moments were all the Cavegirls needed to come away with the win, 2-0.
Artesia had a few chances to get on the board in the second half, including a free kick at the 17:45 mark, but the majority of their time was again spent thwarting Carlsbad defensively.
Just over six minutes into the half, the Cavegirls caught Lady ‘Dog keeper Ashley Garcia out of goal to get on the board. Garcia had a solid game overall in the face of 32 Carlsbad shots on goal.
The girls in blue would round out the final with 7:27 to go in the game on a close-range shot from the side.
The Lady Bulldog varsity will head to Santa Teresa Thursday for a 6 p.m. game against the Lady Desert Warriors before returning home next week to host Clovis Sept. 15 and Alamogordo Sept. 17.
Thursday’s junior varsity game in Santa Teresa was cancelled due to the Desert Warriors’ lack of a JV quad.
