Star Party set for Friday

A Star Party will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, in front of the Visitors’ Center at Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park.

Large telescopes will be available to view the planet Saturn and other wonders of the night sky, such as star clusters and nebulae. Sightings of meteors from the Perseid shower are also likely.

A laser light tour of the summer constellations will begin at 9 p.m.

The event is free, but donations are always appreciated. The Star Party will be cancelled in the event of cloudy or windy weather.

For more information, call the park at 575-887-5516.

Tarantula Talk event slated for Saturday

Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park will host a special Tarantula Talk at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, in the Visitors’ Center.

Attendees will learn why these gigantic, hairy spiders really should not frighten anyone despite their appearance in many horror movies. Damian “Spiderman” Armijo will share his knowledge of these gentle giants and bring many of his own living specimens for visitors to meet.

The program is free; however, regular admission fees apply to enter the zoo.

BaggaVaughns to perform at Full Moon Walk

Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park will host a concert of “oldies but goodies” performed by Vinnie Baggatone and the BaggaVaughns at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29.

A Full Moon Walk will follow, with entrance times limited to between 7:30 and 8 p.m.

The concert is free, but tips for the artists are always appreciated. Normal entrance fees apply for the moon walk: adults, $5; children 7-12, $3; and children 6 and under, free.

Docents will illuminate the animals, but adults may also carry a flashlight for use on the trail.

For more information, call the park at 575-887-5516.
